From a 14-Year-Old Volunteer to an International Social Changemaker, Climate Leader & Youth Empowerment Advocate - The Journey of Abhishek Panwar

At a time when the world is seeking visionary young leaders capable of bridging grassroots realities with global solutions, Abhishek Panwar has emerged as a remarkable force for social transformation. From starting as a volunteer at the age of 14 to representing India at major United Nations-linked platforms, his journey reflects the power of service, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to building a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive world.

Born and raised in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Abhishek began his public service journey through community welfare activities with Nek Karya Seva Samiti. What started with food distribution drives and humanitarian support for vulnerable communities soon evolved into a lifelong mission dedicated to climate action, youth empowerment, social justice, democratic participation, and nation-building.

Today, with over 13 years of grassroots experience, Abhishek is recognized as a youth leader, climate justice advocate, humanitarian, and policy-oriented changemaker whose work has directly and indirectly impacted more than 1.6 lakh people across India.

Championing Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE)

One of the defining pillars of Abhishek's work is his commitment to Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE), the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change's approach to climate education, training, public awareness, public participation, access to information, and international cooperation.

Recognizing that climate action cannot succeed without informed and empowered citizens, Abhishek has dedicated years to promoting climate literacy and youth engagement across India. Through workshops, seminars, outreach programmes, awareness campaigns, policy dialogues, and capacity-building initiatives, he has trained and mentored thousands of young people on climate change, sustainable development, environmental governance, and climate leadership.

His efforts have enabled students, youth leaders, volunteers, and community members to better understand climate challenges while equipping them with practical tools to drive local action and influence policy conversations.

Building Climate Leaders Across India

As the Founder and Convenor of the Green Governance Leaders Program (GGLP), Abhishek is working toward an ambitious vision of developing climate-conscious and governance-oriented leaders from Panchayat to Parliament.

The initiative seeks to nurture future policymakers, elected representatives, social activists, and climate advocates by providing training in climate governance, sustainable development, democratic leadership, public policy, constitutional values, and community engagement.

He is also the Founder and President of the Global South Movement for Climate Justice, a youth-led platform amplifying the voices of communities and young people from developing countries in global climate discussions. Through this initiative, he advocates for climate equity, loss and damage justice, climate finance, and greater representation of Global South perspectives in international negotiations.

Representing India on International Platforms

Abhishek has consistently brought grassroots voices to global policy spaces.

He represented India at the 18th United Nations Conference of Youth on Climate Change (COY18) in Dubai and the 19th United Nations Conference of Youth on Climate Change (COY19) in Baku. At these platforms, he actively contributed to youth consultations, climate policy dialogues, and international discussions under the UNFCCC youth constituency process.

Following COY19, he launched the COY19 GYS National Outreach Programme – India, leading a national team that conducted climate education sessions, awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement activities, and youth consultations, reaching more than 5,000 young people across the country.

His international engagement further expanded when he participated as a Youth Delegate and Civil Society Representative at the United Nations Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar, contributing to discussions on social inclusion, sustainable development, youth participation, and global cooperation.

Over the years, he has trained, mentored, and engaged thousands of youth through climate leadership programmes, fellowship initiatives, governance workshops, sustainability campaigns, public speaking sessions, policy discussions, youth parliaments, and community action projects.

His work has helped create youth-led climate action teams, strengthen volunteer networks, and encourage active citizenship among students and young professionals.

Through educational institutions, youth organisations, and digital platforms, he has inspired young people to participate in climate advocacy, community service, democratic processes, and sustainable development initiatives.

Fighting Hunger and Advancing Public Health

Alongside his climate and youth leadership work, Abhishek remains deeply committed to humanitarian service.

Since 2011, he has been associated with free food distribution initiatives serving patients in government hospitals, orphanages, slum communities, and economically disadvantaged families. These efforts have benefited over 1,50,000 individuals.

In 2023, he helped strengthen and expand a monthly ration kit programme supporting cancer-affected and economically vulnerable families. The initiative has provided nutritional assistance to more than 11,000 beneficiaries, reducing food insecurity and supporting families during difficult medical circumstances.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he emerged as a frontline volunteer, facilitating emergency transportation for patients, distributing medicines and food supplies, and coordinating relief support for vulnerable communities.

Abhishek's contributions have been recognized through numerous national and international awards, fellowships, and leadership opportunities. His recognitions include the South Asia Regional Brilliance Award, Malwa Ratna Award, Pride of Young Hindustan Award, Best Parliamentarian Award, and several distinctions for climate action, youth leadership, humanitarian service, and sustainable development advocacy.

He has also participated in prestigious forums such as the World Bank Group Youth Summit, UN ECOSOC Youth Forum engagements, BRICS youth initiatives, biodiversity networks, climate fellowships, and international youth diplomacy platforms.
