Richa Kar: Zivame Makes Online Lingerie Shopping Simple

Updated: Sep 23, 2021

Startups are all about fixing a problem that the general public is experiencing or improving an existing solution/mechanism. Richa Kar's business was inspired by a common problem: women being embarrassed and subjected to unwanted attention for something as basic as purchasing lingerie from shops and stores. Women are hesitant to buy underwear and other clothing because of lewd remarks from the opposite sex and unwarranted harassment. Richa's Zivame was created to address this problem. She set out on a bold mission to make shopping for intimate clothing easier, and she was successful. Zivame has become a household name among girls and women, thanks to its vast array of clothing options.

Richa Kar is a co-founder of Zivame. Richa and her husband, Kapil Karekar, launched Zivame in 2011. The couple was introduced to one other through a mutual friend. Kapil is a seasoned executive who has worked for companies such as Yahoo!, ESPN, and InMobi for over ten years.

Richa Kar, an Indian entrepreneur, founded "Zivame," an online lingerie shopping site, during a time when talking about underwear, was frowned upon in India. In 2017, Zivame's CEO, Richa Kar, resigned. She is still a member of the board of directors, though. Read on to learn more about Richa Kar and Zivame's achievements.

Richa Kar, Zivame's co-founder, was born in Jamshedpur and comes from a traditional family. Richa worked in the IT industry for a few years after finishing her degree. She went on to earn a Master's degree in 2007 from the prestigious Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NSIMS). After graduating from NMIMS, she worked for Spencers and SAP retail consultancy. Richa's work at Spencers and SAP provided her with excellent retail experience that aided her in her entrepreneurial endeavors. At SAP, she had a client who was connected to Victoria's Secret. Richa realized the horrible reality of lingerie purchasing in India via her interactions and experience dealing with that customer.

Richa Kar financed her venture with INR 30 lakhs borrowed from friends and family. On August 25th, 2011, she set up shop in a modest office space and received her first order five hours later. As the company evolved, it sought capital and received $9 million in two rounds from IDG Ventures, Kalaari Capital, and Unilazer Ventures, among others. Zivame had expanded to a 200-person team within three years of its launch.

Zivame is an online lingerie store with hundreds of styles designed just for Indian women. It is the market leader in this niche online shopping category, with over 5,000 styles, 50 brands, and 100 sizes to choose from. Furthermore, Zivame provides a diverse range of products for women in a variety of categories, including, but not limited to, lingerie and activewear. Zivame has received such a positive response that it now has physical locations across the country. Zivame's products are reasonably priced without sacrificing quality.

Zivame had 5 million monthly visits at one point, with over 1 million of them being unique visitors. Since then, the number has increased by a factor of ten. With the exception of Lakshadweep, Zivame's shipments have reached every Indian state. As e-commerce became more prevalent, Ziavme was fast to seize the opportunity by being among the early adopters. Richa Kar realized as time went on that getting on the e-commerce bandwagon was simply the first step toward success, and that dominating the lingerie market was more crucial.
